A little Portugal + your next solo adventure

Dear Reader,

Portugal has been keeping me busy around here.

After a lot of traveling, researching, writing, and nerding out over Portuguese history, I have finally brought all of my Portugal content together in one place: my new Portugal Travel Guide.

If Portugal has been somewhere on your travel wish list, this is your new starting point:

Explore my Portugal Travel Guide

The guide brings my Portugal content together so you can explore the destination, dig into the history, and start figuring out which places belong on your own trip.

And, because this is The Nerd Traveler, I am not interested in simply telling you where to go.

I want you to understand why these places matter.

Portugal has centuries of stories layered into its cities, monuments, churches, neighborhoods, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Knowing even a little of that history before you arrive can completely change the way you experience a place.

So, if Portugal is calling your name, start with the guide and wander from there.

Start planning your Portugal travels

All of this travel planning has also had me thinking about something else.

Sometimes figuring out where you want to go is the easy part. Actually deciding to take the trip, especially on your own, can be a much bigger leap.

That is why I am very excited to be co-hosting an online travel seminar with solo travel coach Lisa Saper-Bloom in just over 2 weeks.

Saturday, September 26

12:00PM EST
From the comfort of your own home

Our seminar is called Unpack Your Fears, Pack Your Bags, and it is geared toward women who are curious about solo travel, whether you are dreaming about your 1st trip on your own or already traveling solo and looking for a little more confidence along the way.

We are approaching solo travel from 2 very complementary directions.

During the 1st hour, Lisa will lead Unpack Your Fears, focusing on some of the fears and concerns that can make solo travel feel intimidating.

Then I will take over for the 2nd hour with Pack Your Bags.

After Lisa tackles the mental side of solo travel, I get to nerd out on the practical part: how to actually plan it.

If you have ever thought, I would love to go there, but would I really go by myself?, we created this seminar with you in mind.

Registration is required.

If you have any questions or need help registering, simply reply to this email.

Whether Portugal is next for you or somewhere completely different, I hope this gives you a little encouragement to turn someday into an actual trip.

Here are my personal recommendations to help with booking trips:

✈️ Airline mistake fares and deals, consider signing up for
Going.com Premium. They even track when airline points are good options.

🚶‍♀️‍➡️Book free walking tours on Guru Walks. Please budget some money (in local currency) for tips, though!

🧭 Book guided tour experience on Get Your Guide and Viator.

🔐 I always always protect my trip with Travel Safe travel insurance. Click here to see options and to get a quote.
Unless you have quite a few pre-trip expenses (deposits, tickets purchased in advance, etc.), you will likely not need Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) insurance.

🤖 I created an AI Assistant to help you with your trip planning. It includes my lessons, tips, and trip across my 30+ years of international and domestic travel. It also has two fillable workbooks to help you stay organized. Click here for more details!

💳
I use my Capital One Venture X card when traveling. I earn miles with each purchase and do not pay any foreign transaction fees (it was the least expensive way to spend 50 Euros on my recent trip!)

🚗 I have used Welcome Pickups for my airport transport upon arrival and departure. I like knowing someone will be waiting for me, I can walk past anyone posing as a taxi driver, and usually the driver is a local who can give you more information about your desination.

🏨 Lastly, I always recommend booking hotel rooms directly with the hotel company. 3rd party booking sites - Expedia, Booking, Trivago, Kayak - could prove to be a nightmare if you have any delays or cancellations.

Hi Reader, If applying for a U.S. passport has ever felt unnecessarily complicated, there is some good news on the horizon. The U.S. government has announced changes to both the passport application process and the passport itself, and some of them could make international travel planning considerably easier. The biggest change: first-time passport applicants are expected to eventually be able to complete the entire application online. Traditionally, your first passport requires an in-person...

Hi Reader,Boarding used to be the hardest part of flying for me. The crowding, the announcements, the general chaos of 200 strangers finding their seats. These days I slip on my noise-canceling headphones, start a podcast or a calm playlist, and it all fades to a hum. For a formerly anxious flyer, that quiet has changed everything. Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days runs October 6 and 7, and it's one of the few times the bigger travel gear actually goes on sale. So before the noise starts, here's...

Hi Reader,Every time one of you hits reply to say a UNESCO site finally clicked, or that one of my itinerary posts or PDFs pulled you out of a planning spiral, I save the note. Those messages are the whole reason this exists. So this week I'm doing something I don't do often enough: saying thank you, and properly introducing you to the two history obsessions I've turned into a real business. 🤓Here's the honest part. For years I have worked here in Austin. And I never once imagined the work...
