My travel picks before Amazon Prime Day (Oct 6 to 7) ✈️

Hi Reader,

Boarding used to be the hardest part of flying for me. The crowding, the announcements, the general chaos of 200 strangers finding their seats.

These days I slip on my noise-canceling headphones, start a podcast or a calm playlist, and it all fades to a hum. For a formerly anxious flyer, that quiet has changed everything.

Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days runs October 6 and 7, and it's one of the few times the bigger travel gear actually goes on sale.

So before the noise starts, here's what's genuinely worth it. ✈️

Quick note: some links below are affiliate links. I only point you to gear I actually pack, and buying through them supports the blog at no extra cost to you.

Here's my honest take. Most of Prime Day is noise. But a handful of travel items are worth watching, especially the bigger-ticket ones that rarely dip otherwise.

Worth watching for a deal:

  • Bose noise-canceling headphones. You just heard why these top my list. If they've been sitting in your cart, this is the window.
  • Eagle Creek compression packing cubes. The difference between "carry-on only" working and not working. I pack and then compress.
  • A universal travel adapter, plus a grounded one for hair tools. Cheap, essential, and easy to forget until you're standing in a Lisbon hotel room at midnight.

✨ Nerd Alert: Many historic European hotels run on older electrical systems, so the right grounded adapter is a safety thing, not just a convenience.

Nice to restock while you're there:

  • Solid shampoo and conditioner bars, plus a sunscreen stick. Carry-on friendly, no liquid limits, no spills.
  • A Travelon anti-theft bag or the She's Birdie personal alarm. Small precautions that let you explore crowded historic districts with your shoulders down.

Everything I actually travel with, organized by category, lives on my Travel Resources page. That's the one link to bookmark before the 6th.

And if you'd rather have a system than a shopping list, The Confident Traveler ($27) pairs an AI travel assistant with two workbooks that walk you through everything before you go. Click here to take a look.

One last thing, and it's the fun part. Prime Day is a means to an end, and the end is a trip that means something.

So tell me, and please hit reply: what's the next place on your list, and the one piece of gear you can't travel without?

I always get ideas from your answers.

Yours in nerdy history and travel!

Hi Reader, If applying for a U.S. passport has ever felt unnecessarily complicated, there is some good news on the horizon. The U.S. government has announced changes to both the passport application process and the passport itself, and some of them could make international travel planning considerably easier. The biggest change: first-time passport applicants are expected to eventually be able to complete the entire application online. Traditionally, your first passport requires an in-person...

Hi Reader,Every time one of you hits reply to say a UNESCO site finally clicked, or that one of my itinerary posts or PDFs pulled you out of a planning spiral, I save the note. Those messages are the whole reason this exists. So this week I'm doing something I don't do often enough: saying thank you, and properly introducing you to the two history obsessions I've turned into a real business. 🤓Here's the honest part. For years I have worked here in Austin. And I never once imagined the work...
